Hydroponic experiment for Schools

AIM: to teach the elements necessary for plant health

METHOD:  3 basic hydroponic systems will use 3 nutrient solutions.
One nutrient solution has all the elements for plant growth.
The other two solutions have an element missing.

Use the growing media Perlite - or Coconut coir to fill the pots and plant seedlings or young plants into the growing media. It is recommended to wash the soil off the roots to prevent any disease or other fertilisers entering the experiment.

Add the complete nutrient to water as per pack directions and water plants until media is moist. Put some nutrients in the tray so when the media begins to dry out it will soak some up from the tray. Leave plants in direct or lightly shaded sunlight to encourage growth.

We need to wait until plants are actively growing. This will depend on conditions, however around 1-2 weeks is necessary.

At this point, switch 2 of the systems to the 2 alternative nutrient solutions and observe and/or photograph the plants at similar times of day to see what leaf colour are. Refer to the colour brochure to see what plant symptoms occur and try to identify the nutritional disorder.

The plants should look different to the control plants within 5-10 days.

The answers are in the envelope supplied with the kit. Don't be tempted to check them too soon.
