Silicon, the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, forms a component of most rocks. Plants absorb silicon from silica dissolved in soil water, although its concentration remains relatively low due to the low solubility of rocks. Typically, silicon concentration in soil water doesn't exceed 20 ppm, a level recommended for hydroponic nutrient solutions.

Properties and Handling:

GT Silica, a concentrated mixture of silicic acid and potassium hydroxide (potassium silicate), serves the purpose of supplementing hydroponic nutrient solutions with silicon. Silicates, being highly alkaline, require careful handling. Protective measures include wearing gloves and eye protection, storing the solution in a secure location away from children, and diluting it with water before adding it to the tank. Safety data sheets are readily available.

Application and Benefits:

To integrate silicon into nutrient solutions, GT Silica is diluted at a rate of 1 ml per liter, resulting in a 20 ppm silicon concentration—the standard Dutch recommendation. For run-to-waste systems, add GT Silica when preparing the nutrient solution; for recirculating systems, introduce it to the tank weekly. The alkaline nature of GT Silica necessitates checking and adjusting the pH of the nutrient solution after addition. Regular usage provides tangible benefits, enhancing plant resistance to pathogens and improving tolerance to environmental stressors like heat and water scarcity.
